Mitch Zak



Mitch Zak is one of California’s leading strategists, with more than two decades of public policy, political and organizational communications expertise. He has worked in government, business and with non-profit organizations to develop proficiencies in health care, water, transportation, real estate, public safety, government reform and alternative energy. From landmark public safety reform to historic Medi-Cal and health care policy, Zak has led teams that are client-focused, high-performing and successful.

As Partner and Co-Founder of Randle Communications, Zak helps lead the firm managing client projects and company staff. He has worked with several of California’s most notable leaders including Hewlett-Packard President and CEO Meg Whitman and former Governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pete Wilson. Zak was an advisor and spokesperson for Ms. Whitman’s 2010 gubernatorial campaign, and Coalitions Director during California’s 2003 Recall Election on behalf of Governor Schwarzenegger. He worked for Governor Wilson from 1991-1998, as a member of the governor’s personal staff as well as senior positions at the Department of Fish & Game and the California Trade and Commerce Agency. Zak also worked as a member of Governor Wilson’s political team during the successful 1994 re-election campaign and then on various statewide ballot measures.

Strategic planning, message development, media relations and developing communications programs are Zak’s specialty. The focus is achieving client objectives through effective outreach using the best combination of traditional tools and cutting edge technology. Zak has managed Randle project teams for clients including the California Hospital Association, California Association of REALTORS®, Golden State Water Company, Golden 1 Credit Union, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, California Family Fitness as well as statewide public safety leaders including sheriffs, district attorneys, police chiefs, rank-and-file peace officers and crime victims.

From on-the-record situations to speechwriting, news conferences to crisis communications, Zak develops powerful news angles that get covered as a result of messages that are informative, timely and persuasive. Zak has successfully placed clients in the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Sacramento Bee and other prominent statewide and national print, radio and broadcast television outlets including CNN, CNBC, FOX News and FOX Business. From proactive communications programs to the most challenging of crisis situations, Zak integrates traditional and digital communications tools into an efficient and effective tactical action plan.

Zak resides in Sacramento with his wife Tami, their son Deuce and daughter Molly. In his spare time, Zak loves to golf and is an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from the University of California, Davis and a Master’s degree in public administration from the University of Southern California. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Sacramento Press Club and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sacramento Public Relations Association.
